MIC (Minority Information Center) opening information sheet, 1989

Description

Known today as the Multicultural Engagement Center (MEC), the Minority Information Center (MIC) was an agency of the Students’ Association at the University of Texas at Austin. Located at the Undergraduate Teaching Center (UTC) until its 2011 relocation to the Student Activity Center (SAC), the MIC was funded by the UT Students’ Association and the Office of the President. Although a date is not provided on this information sheet, the intended audience of African American and Mexican American students, as seen on the sheet, suggests a date soon after the MIC’s establishment in September 1988, since the MIC would gradually expand to support other groups, including Native American, Asian American, and queer students in the following decades. With a number of influential members in its Board of Directors, such as the Texas Exes and the Dean of Students, the MIC was able to provide minority students with a range of resources and networks.
The MIC was formed in response to the low graduation rate of African American and Mexican American students—only 35% and 45% of African American and Mexican American students, respectively, graduated in five years or less. The MIC hoped to improve the graduation rate of minorities by providing career and academic resources and organizing social events to create trust between and within communities. The creation of the MIC, along with other organized, student-led social groups like the anti-apartheid movement and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Statue Foundation, reflected a growing desire among UT students to provide a more inclusive and socially active environment.
